Theosis/Deification in the Oriental Orthodox Liturgical Tradition

Someone has compiled a list of prayers and references in the Oriental Orthodox Liturgical Tradition which teach about Theosis/Deification . The list contains references to deification in the liturgical life of the Orthodox Church. In particular the list focuses primarily on the Coptic Orthodox prayers but also includes a few references to other Oriental Orthodox liturgical prayers:

"Grant that evil spirits do not descend upon this water or enter with the person being baptized, nor unclean spirits, nor the spirits of noon, nor the spirit of the evening, nor the spirits of the night, nor the spirits of the air, nor the spirits of drowning, nor the spirits of the devil which are underneath the earth, but vanquish them all by Your mighty power. May they become as naught before the sign of Your Cross and Your Holy Name which we call upon, and which is full of glory and is feared by those opposing us, so that whosoever is baptized in it will cast a way the old nature which corrupts, like evil desires, and put on the new nature which restores him to the image of this Creator, and makes him illuminated with the light of the truth from Your Holy Spirit, and attain eternal life and blessed hope, and stand before the throne of Christ and receive the heavenly crown and the remission of sins. May this oil and water be blessed, and filled with glory and purity."

"O Master, Lord God, Eternal One, Who created man in His image and likeness, who gave him domination over creation. And when he fell into sin, You did not leaven bins, but planned the salvation of the world by the incarnation of Your Only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, deliver from the servitude of the enemy, accept him into Your kingdom. Open the eyes of his (her) heart that he (she) may be enlightened by the light of Your gospel of the Kingdom.

May his (her) life be guarded by the angels of light to save him (her) from every plot and evil confrontation, from the arrow that flies by day, the destruction that wastes at noonday, from those who are in darkness, from the apparitions of the night. Uproot from his (her) heart all unclean spirits, the lying spirit that discomforts his (her) heart, the spirit of darkness and deception, the spirit of love of money, the worship of all idols, the spirit of untruth, and all the uncleanness of demonic teaching.

Make him (her) a sheep in Your Holy flock which is for Your Christ, a wholly pure member of the universal church, a pure vessel, a son (daughter) of light, an heir to Your kingdom, that he (she) may fight according to Christ‟s commandments, protect he seal from any thief and the garment from deterioration; that he (she) may attain the holiness given the saints by Jesus Christ, our Lord, to Whom is due all glory, honor, dominion and worship together with You and Holy Spirit, the life-giver and One in Essence with You, now and ever and unto the ages of all ages, Amen."

"Priest says the following prayer silently on his own behalf while kneeling down before the baptismal font.

O, Merciful, Compassionate, and Loving God, you scrutinize the hearts and kidneys and You know the inner-most secrets of all human beings, and to You no thing they do is invisible, but rather they are all known and submissive before You. O God, You know the other things I do, do not detest me and do not turn Your face away from me, but grant that all my sins flee away from me at this hour. O God, who forgive the sins of people and bring them to repentance, wash away the dirt of my body and soul, and cleanse me completely with Your invisible power and Your divine hand, so that if I read an absolution to others who ask me to give it to them, which is the faith made available to us through Your abundant and indescribable Love for Mankind - then I am not myself condemned as a slave to sin. On the contrary, O Lord, who alone are without sin, who alone are Good and Lover of Mankind, let not Your humble servant return shamefaced, but forgive me my sins. Send Your Mighty Power down from Your Holy Exaltedness, and strengthen me that I perform the service of this great divine mystery. Grant that the image of Christ be portrayed in those who receive the baptism of the new birth through me a sinner. Establish them on the foundation of Your apostles and prophets and do not destroy them ever after. Place them like a true vine in Your Catholic and Apostolic Orthodox church that they advance in Your worship and that Your Holy Name be glorified everywhere, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen."

PRIEST: O Master, Lord our God, the great and the eternal, who are wondrous in glory; who keeps his covenant and his mercy unto them who love him with all their heart; who has given to us redemption from sins through his only-begotten son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, the life of everyone, the help of those who flee to him, the hope of those who cry unto him. Before whom stand thousands of thousands and ten thousand times ten thousands of holy angels and archangels, the Cherubim and the Seraphim and all the innumerable host of the heavenly powers. O God, who has sanctified these gifts which are set fourth, through the coming down upon them of your holy spirit, you have purified them. Purify us also, our Master, form our sins, the hidden and manifest; and every thought which is not pleasing to your goodness, God the philanthropic one, may it be far from us. Purify our souls, our bodies, our spirits, our hearts, our eyes, our understanding, our thoughts and our consciences, so that with a pure heart, and enlightened soul, and unashamed face, a faith unfeigned, a perfect love, and firm hope, we may dare with boldness without fear to pray to you, O God the holy Father who are in the heavens and say: Our Father....

CONGREGATION: Our father who art in heaven; hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; they will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our bread of the morrow, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us form evil. In Christ Jesus our Lord. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

PRIEST: (Inaudibly) Yes, we ask you, O good father, who loves goodness, lead us not into temptation, nor let any iniquity get the rule over us but deliver us from worthless works and form the thoughts, motions, sights and touch thereof. Destroy the tempter and drive him away. Rebuke also his movements implanted in us, and cut off from us all impulses which drag us into sin. And deliver us by your holy power, in Christ Jesus, our Lord, through whom the glory, the honour, the dominion, and adoration are due unto you, with him and the holy spirit, the Life-giver, who is of one essence with you now, and at all times, and unto the age of all ages. Amen.

DEACON: Bow your heads to the Lord.

CONGREGATION: Before you, O Lord.

PRIEST: (Inaudibly: Prayer of submission) The grace of the beneficence of your only-begotten son, our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ are now fulfilled. We have confessed his saving passion, we have preached his death, we have believed in his resurrection, and the mystery is accomplished. We give thanks to you, O Lord God the Pantocrator for your mercy is great upon us, for you have prepared for us those things which the angels desire to behold. We ask and entreat your goodness, O Philanthropic One, that since you have purified us all, you join us unto Yourself, through our partaking of your divine mysteries. That we may become filled with your holy spirit with the longing for your true love, may we speak of your glory at all times, in Christ Jesus, our Lord, through whom the glory, the honour, the dominion, and the adoration are due unto you, is of one essence with you, now, and at all times and unto the age of all ages. Amen.

DEACON: Let us attend in the fear of God.

PRIEST:

Peace be with all. Irini pasi.

CONGREGATION:

And with your spirit. Ke to Pnevmati soo.

PRIEST: (Inaudibly: absolution to the father) O Master, Lord God the Pantocrator, healer of our souls, our bodies, and spirits, you are he who said unto our father Peter through the mouth of your only-begotten son, “You are Peter, upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it, and I will give you the keys of the kingdom of the heavens. That which you will bind upon the earth shall be bound in the heavens, and that which you will loose upon the earth shall be loosed in the heavens. Therefore, O Lord, let your servants, my fathers, my brethren and my own weakness, be absolved by my mouth, through your holy spirit, O you, good and Philanthropic one. O God, who takes away the sin of the world, hasten, to accept the repentance of your servants for a light of understanding and forgiveness of sins. For you are a compassionate and merciful God; you are patient; your mercy is great and true. If we have sinned against you either by word or by deeds, pardon and forgive us, as a good and Philanthropic one. O God, absolve us and all your people form every sin, form every curse, form every denial, form every false oath, and from every encounter with the heretics and the heathens. O our Lord, grant us a reason, power and understanding to flee from any evil deed of the adversary, and grant us to do what is pleasing unto you at all times. Inscribe our names with all the choir of your saints in the kingdom of the heavens, in Christ Jesus, our Lord, through whom the glory, the honour, the dominion, and the adoration are due unto you, with him and the holy spirit, the Life- giver who is of one essence with you, now and at all times and unto the age of all ages. Amen.

PRIEST: (Inaudibly) Remember, O Lord, my own weakness and forgive my many sins, and where transgression has abounded, let your grace be multiplied in abundance. Because of my own sins and the abomination of my heart, deprive not your people of the grace of your holy spirit. Absolve us and absolve all your people form every sin, from every curse, from every denial, from every false oath, and from every encounter with the heretics and the heathens. O our Lord, grant us a reason, power and understanding to flee from any evil deed of the adversary, and grant us to do what is pleasing unto your at all times. Amen

DEACON: Saved, Amen. And with your spirit. In the fear of God, let us attend.

CONGREGATION: Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy

"Prayer before Communion, Coptic Rite

O Lord, I am not worthy to have You under the roof of my house because I am a sinner. Just say a word Lord, and my soul will be healed. Tell my soul that my sins are forgiven. I lack all righteousness and now there is nothing left for me except Your mercy and Your love for mankind. You have descended from the glory of Heaven to our humble world and were born in a manger. Accept, O Lord my worthless soul as it awaits Your splendid presence. you did not disdain to enter the house of the leper to heal him, so please permit O Lord, to enter my heart to purify it. You did not forbid the sinful woman to kiss Your feet, so please do not deprive me from partaking of the Holy Communion. Let me unite with You that You may rid me of all my sins. Open my eyes and heart that I may accept Your Gifts and Blessings and let Your Holy Spirit abide in me that I may unite with You and live for the Glory of Your Holy Name.

Amen.

"Prayer after Communion, Coptic Rite

My heart is filled with joy and my tongue with rejoicing. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit finds joy in God my savior. I have come to You, O Lord, so that you may clothe me in purity that I may be worthy to share in Your joy.

Let my union with You today be everlasting. Make me increase in virtue and strengthen my faith and my hope. Let my partaking of the Holy Communion be a sign for my salvation and a rope of blesing for my new birth. Let it be for the purification of my love and an everlasting joy for my soul and an answer to my prayers before Your Holy Altar.

Here I give myself to Your mercy that I may unite with You and that You may lead me according to Your will.

Guide my thoughts and my senses and my desires and bless them that they may be at Your command. Revive my soul, alert my conscience, disperse all images of the enemy and order the storms to be calm, be with me and quiet my fear. Quench my thirst and kindle the fire of Your love in my heart and correct all my deficiencies.

Abide with me till the end of my life on earth for You alone are my goal and pleasure; You alone my God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

"Priest:
You, who are THE BEING at all times, have come to us on earth. You have come into the womb of the Virgin. You, the Infinite, being God, did not consider equality with God a thing to be grasped.

But emptied Yourself, and took the form of a servant, and blessed my nature in Yourself, and fulfilled your law on my behalf You have shown me the rising up from my fall.

You have lifted the curse of the Law. You have abolished sin in the flesh. You have shown me the power of Your authority. You have given sight to the blind. You have raised the dead from the tombs. You have established nature by the word.

You have manifested to me the economy of your tender mercy. You have borne the oppression of the wicked. You have given Your back to the scourge. Your cheeks You have left open to those who smite.

For my sake, O my Master, You have not hidden Your face from the shame of spitting.

O Master, Lord Jesus Christ our God, Who adorned the heavens with the stars and manifested the earth in the beauty of flowers bearing fruits of diverse kinds, Who has bestowed on mankind heavenly things, and hast given unto them the comforts of the earth. Deacon:Let us ask the Lord.
Priest:O Master, Lord, God the Pantocrator, the Only Eternal One, the Father of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ, who have commanded that Your servants be born of the baptism for the new birth, and have granted them the forgiveness of their sins, and the robe of incorruption, and the grace of sonship. Now, our King, send down on them the grace of Your Holy Spirit, the Comforter, and grant that they share in the eternal life, that, according to the promise of Your Only-Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, God and Savior, if they are born again by water and the Holy Spirit, they can enter the Kingdom of Heaven.Through the Name, power, and grace of Your Only-Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord; for He is glorified with You and the Holy Spirit. "Then the priest prays the following on the child’s mother

O Lord, God the Pantocrator, Father of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, treasure of light, the Creator and Subduer of all sicknesses, reconciling all through repentance. You have ornamented everything by the Law of Your love, and administration of Your Word, Your Only Begotten Son who appeared unto us in the flesh from the Mother of God, the Ever Virgin Saint Mary, and the Holy Spirit the Healer, Physician of our nature and our guidance to the true knowledge, so that we may be saved through the warning of Your holy gospels.

For the sake of man whom You have created and the act of the woman that was made of him to be his helpmate, as the communion of the legal marriage, and blessed the fruit of the birth according to the law being on Your image and likeness, You made an order for nature to follow, and ornamented the world and all that is therein through all Your saints and the offspring of the Kingdom of heaven. For this, O Lord, You purified our nature and set us free. We ask and entreat You, O Lover of Mankind, to look upon Your servant (...), so that the Holy Spirit be renewed within her. Purify her from any defilement.May her soul be renewed, as well as her body and spirit. Set her free from all her old nature and her inequities and grant her forgiveness of her sins.

Purify them from the sin, which is in the world, and give them freedom from servitude of corruption, for in Your hands, Almighty God, is the power of mercy.
Deacon:Ask for them whose names were presented, that the Almighty God will make them worthy of the washing of the new birth for the remission of sins.

People:Lord have mercy.

Priest:O Master, Lord, God the Pantocrator, the Father of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, we ask and entreat Your goodness, O Lover of Mankind, have mercy on Your servants whose name were presented.Make them worthy of the grace for which they were brought forward to receive from Your Holy Spirit.
