Truly a wonder and joy to see the way that His Holiness Pope Tawadrous II received his elevation and enthronement to the See of St Mark. The humility and the sense of love that he expressed all spoke in a beautiful way to the Orthodox world. May his reign be like no other, a Patriarchate that leads us to union with the Holy Trinity, a witness of Orthodox Unity, and a confession of Christ Crucified and Risen to the ends of the earth. Rites of the Enthronement of the Patriarch
Service of Enthronement of His Holiness the Pope of Alexandria
One of the bishops starts the prayer according to the custom, the lections for 17th of Hathor are read until the Praxis (Acts) and the Synaxarion. Then the priests go out with their censers and the deacons carrying crosses to the Papal residence, where the metropolitans and the bishops are with the one chosen for the patriarchal throne, then the door of the cathedral is locked and the keys are given to one of the archdeacons to stand at the door, waiting for the new Pope when he comes in order to deliver the keys to him.
When the priests and the deacons reach the papal residence, the metropolitans and the bishops should be vested and surrounding the new Pope. Then the Papal entourage proceeds towards the cathedral, preceded by the deacons and the priests and one of the archdeacons walks in front of the senior bishop carrying the Gospel, while sing "Evlogemenos" (Blessed is He who comes)

And the procession continues until they reach the door of the cathedral, then the archdeacon proceeds to the Pope and delivers the keys to him. His Holiness opens the door saying:
“Open to me the gates of righteousness: that I may go into them, and confess to the Lord: this is the gate of the Lord, the righteous shall enter into it. I shall confess Thee,Lord: for Thou hast heard me, and hast become to me salvation.” (Ps 117: 19-21)
When the door is opened, the bells of the cathedral ring, welcoming the new Pope.
The procession continues in the same order until they reach the sanctuary door, while they sing "Omonogenis" (O Only Begotten Son..)
O Only-begotten Son, and Immortal Logos of God, who for our salvation did accept all (sufferings), Who was incarnate of the Holy Theotokos Mother of God and (Ever-Virgin Mary).
Who, without change, became Man and was crucified, Christ, God.
(Who) Trampled down death by death, One of the Holy Trinity, Who is glorified with the Father and the Holy Spirit, save us.
Holy God, who being God, for our sake, became Man without change.
Holy Mighty, who by weakness showed forth what is greater than power.
Holy Immortal, who was crucified for our sake, and endured death on the Cross and accepted it in His flesh, the Eternal and Immortal.
O Holy Trinity, Have mercy on us.
They all prostrate themselves before the holy sanctuary.
The Pope stands below the step of the sanctuary door between two bishops, while the metropolitans and the bishops ascend the step of the sanctuary door and form two rows.
The priests and the deacons occupy their assigned places.
The senior bishop then says the Prayer of the Gospel (from the Liturgy of Saint Gregory)

And after that he delivers the nomination to one of the archdeacons, who reads it from the pulpit. Then the senior bishop enters into the sanctuary and sits on the throne, surrounded by the metropolitans and the bishops according to their ranks.
THE NOMINATION
In the name of the father and the son and the Holy Spirit, the Holy undivided Trinity, One God, our God we the Orthodox Christians; in Whom we hope till the last breath and unto Whom we send up unto the highest the glory and the honour, forever.
We the metropolitans and the bishops and the priests and the deacons and all the Christ loving congregation of the cities of Alexandria and Cairo and all the region of Egypt, and the city of our God, Jerusalem, and all the countries of Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Australia. When the calamity befell us and we became orphans, when the triple blessed Pope Shenouda III of thrice blessed memory departed us to the heavenly chambers; him who has received all the holy promises, and departed to God whom he loved, and heard from Him that voice full of joy saying unto him: “Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Master.” When we became orphaned and the holy Church of God became a widow; this which he had shepherded with his teachings, we entreated the Most High to guide us to whom would be worthy of the great archpriesthood, that he may shepherd us in the way of the Lord, and guide us to the haven of salvation, so with gift from on high and the election of the Holy Spirit, We have all agreed with one heart and elected the God fearing Abba Tawadros, general bishop of Albehera, from the monks of St. Pishoy monastery as Pope and Patriarch and Archbishop for the Apostolic See, the See of Saint Mark the Evangelist of Egypt, Nubia, Sudan, Pentapolis, and all the regions of the See in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Australia. We have elected him because he is God fearing, hospitable, adorned by knowledge and understanding, pure, diligent in publishing the evangelical percepts, well in governing, watchful in the preservation of the rites and the traditions of the Church. We have crowned him as principal shepherd, Pope and Patriarch of the holy Church of God, to shepherd us in compassion and meekness.
Therefore we have inscribed this nomination and signed it, giving thanks unto the Holy Trinity, the father, the Son and the holy spirit. Amen.
Following this, the metropolitans and the bishops shall descend from the throne and shall stand before the altar in order to install the Pope, and the elected one shall kneel before the altar. The senior bishop shall pray the Prayer of Thanksgiving:

Guard his priesthood blameless unto the end, that he may minister unto You with spiritual sacrifices at all times, according to the order of the Great High priest, Who is in the heavens, Jesus Christ our Lord. To Whom, together with You and the Holy Spirit is due the might and the glory and the honour forever. Amen.
The senior bishop then turns his face towards the east and says:
Behold, O God upon us and upon our ministry and cleanse us from all blemish, and kindle from on high the grace of the archpriesthood in Your servant Abba Tawadros, that he be worthy in Your good will to shepherd Your people blamelessly. For You are merciful and righteous and unto You is due glory, honour, might and worship forever. Amen.
Then he turns his face to the elected one and says:

All the wise men of Israel who work the strings of gold, make an Aaronic garment that befits the honor of the Priesthood of our holy father the archpriest, Pope Abba Tawadros, and our fathers the metropolitans and the bishops assembled with us, the beloved of Christ.

And after they put the crown on the head of the Pope, the metropolitans and the bishops shall take off their crowns and put on the Pallin. Thenthey lead him up to the altar in order to receive the cross and the staff from the altar and the senior bishop shall say to him:
Receive the staff of the shepherding from the great Shepherd of shepherds, Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God Who abides forever, that you may shepherd His people and feed them with life-giving teachings. For He has entrusted you with the souls of His sheep and from your hands He shall ask for their blood.
And after he receives the staff of the shepherding from the altar, he proceeds to receive the cross also...

Then they bring him the incense box to sign it and put one hand in the censer and the metropolitans and the bishops do likewise and they shall depart from the sanctuary. Then they bring him to the throne, and when he ascends the first step, the senior bishop says:

Then they present to him the gospel of Saint Mark to greet it, and the chanters say (Tishori):
The golden censer is the Virgin, her aroma is our Savior. She gave birth to Him; He saved us and forgave us our sins.
Then the chanters say this hymn (To Makario):
The blessed (Tawadros),
the holy fully honored,
our father and master,
Pope and Patriarch of the
great city of Alexandria,
Libya, Pentapolis,
Ethiopia, Africa and all
the land of Egypt.

Then one of the priests shall read from the letter of Saint Paul to the Hebrews (4:14- 5:1-6):
Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness. Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: "You are My Son, Today I have begotten You." As He also says in another place: "You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek"

and your partners in the Apostolic Liturgy, our fathers the metropolitans and the bishops assembled with us,
May the Lord keep your lives.
Then he says the introduction to the Gospel:
Stand in the fear of God. Let us hear the Holy Gospel from the mouth of our honored and righteous father, the thrice blessed, our father, the father of fathers, the shepherd of shepherds, the archbishop, the successor of Saint Mark the Apostle and Evangelist, the great among the patriarchs, the beloved of
Christ.
Our holy father, Abba Tawadros, pope of the great city of Alexandria and patriarch of the See of St. Mark and all regions of Egypt.
And the city of our God, Jerusalem, and Pentapolis, Libya, Nubia, Sudan and all Africa, and the lands of immigration.
May the God of heaven confirm him on his throne for many years and peaceful times, humiliate all his enemies under his feet speedily, grant him calm and delightful times, and grant us grace and mercy through his prayers and supplications.
A chapter of the holy Gospel according to our teacher Saint John the Evangelist and pure disciple, may his blessing be with us. Amen.
His Holiness the Pope shall then read the Gospel in Coptic and Arabic from John 10:1-16:
Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers." Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them. Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep”

The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold;them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

After the conclusion of the Gospel, the metropolitans and the bishops kiss it while the chanters sing (piEpnevma):
The Spirit of Comfort came down upon the apostles on the feast of Pentecost, and they spoke in many tongues.
It came to pass when the days of Pentecost were completed that all twelve apostles were gathered together.
The Spirit of Comfort came down from heaven, resting upon each one, and they spoke in many tongues.
To the end of ages, O the tongue of incense. To the end of ages, O tongue of gold,
O the successor of Saint Mark the Apostle, Pope Abba Tawadros the archpriest.
His Holiness the Pope then says his word and they shall continue with the divine Liturgy according to custom. At the conclusion of the prayer they shall go to seek the blessing of the relics of Saint Mark.
